3 Bones To Pick With Health & Fitness:

This is not me myth busting, this is simply me addressing some frustrating opinions that are awfully common within the health and fitness space. So, hopefully you will come away from this website with a little more knowledge so that next time you hear somebody waffle on about one of the following subjects you can stop them dead in their tracks!
1. Low calorie does not mean healthier:
There are two points I would like to make in this section, first one being packaging, just because the label says it is low calorie this does not automatically make it healthy. When companies bring out a “low calorie” version of a food, mayonnaise for example, the packaging is basically saying that this has fewer calories than before. In the UK this stat has a 30% buffer, that huge!! (somebody please correct me if I am off slightly with that)
Number two, just because something actually is low in calories does not mean it is going to benefit your body, for example you could live a very low-calorie diet of just salads, but would you be getting all the nurturance your body need needs? The vitamins, the proteins, the essential fats, the minerals etc. – No.
2. BCAA’s:
Marketed extremely well, but necessary? - Absolutely not. BCAA or Branch Chain Amino Acids can be found in nearly every source of protein so if you eat a healthy and balanced diet you will already have more than enough amino acids in your body. What do Amino Acids actually do, they help with the process of protein synthesis. Years ago I used to buy a tub of BCAA’s every month for £20+ in a bid to make my body as health and efficient as possible, what a waste of money that was just for some blueberry flavoured water! Again, it is marketed to make you think you need it when you really do not.

3. Alcohol is not the be all and end all of your diet:
This may seem very relatable at this moment in time during lockdown, but just because you have decided to have a mojito or a beer this does not mean your diet has taken a turn. A lot of people live by the “all or nothing rule”, they either do not drink at all or drink arguably way too much. If you have a family BBQ to attend in the evening and you want to enjoy a few whiskeys you can but you could perhaps have a smaller lunch to accommodate for that. It is a case of balancing everything out.
To conclude:
1. Low-calorie is great, but you also need nutrients in your diet.
2. BCAA’s are a waste of money if you consume a good amount of protein in your diet.
3. You can fit a drink or 2, or 3 in your diet.
Josh.
