Apple VS Fitbit

The vast majority of people now have a smartwatch especially if you are into your training, whether it be going to the gym, swimming, cycling, running etc. Your smartwatch will track everything you do; steps, calories, sleep, heart rate and much more, it is basically an extension of you. But which is the best watch to get; the Apple Watch, the Fitbit Blaze, the new Garmin or something else??

It does not matter which is the “best”. When it comes to measuring any and everything on your watch they do not need to be absolutely spot on. You could wear a Garmin on one wrist and a Fitbit on the other, you would get 2 different readings. Does this matter that they are not 100% accurate, no.

These watches are a constant variable and what I mean by that is if your watch always over calculates by 100 Kcals you will always be 100 Kcals over and you then have a new baseline. Your watch will always be slightly off, but by how much will never change.

3 things that are great about a smartwatch: (in my personal opinion)

1. Tracks your sleep. If you have one and you wear it in bed you know exactly how interesting it is to look at your sleep. Example, you have a restless night’s sleep, followed by a 13-hour day at work and you now feel the need to train. If you have looked at your Fitbit and seen that you have only actually had 5 hours of good sleep, is it really necessary to stress the body more by training? Perhaps not. Same can be said if you have a really good night of sleep (7-9 hours) you may notice how good your training was the following day.

Missing 1 day of training is not going to cause you to gain 10kg!!

Sleeping > training.

If you do not believe me, try going a week without training vs a week without sleep.

2. Makes you aware, Part 1. I am a huge fan of Krispy Kreme’s original glazed doughnuts, I have had 3 in one sitting, easily, that is 600 Kcals. I am not going to tell you not to because that would make me a hypocrite. When you are training, running or walking and you look at how many calories you have burnt you will soon realise what it takes to burn 600 calories off and you may even think twice about overindulging on a regular basis. Balance.

3. Makes you aware, Part 2. How many times has your Apple Watch or Fitbit bleeped at you telling you to move a little bit more because you have been sat down for nearly an hour, quite a few I am sure, especially during working hours. This does not mean you have to go bust out a marathon, it might just mean you walk over to the coffee machine or to the toilets just move your legs and bring your shoulders back off from your desk. Posture.

To summarise, glazed doughnuts are the best ones and smartwatches are a great tool when it comes to your health, regardless of how accurate or inaccurate they might be.

Stay safe,

Josh.
