Are you training or exercising?

I recently read a book where training and exercise were mentioned and I want to expand on it. Now, this may seem like a stupid question to pose, but there is a difference in my opinion.

Exercising:

You spontaneously decide to go for run or take a trip to the gym (or your living room for a home workout during lockdown), you do not really have any direction with what you are doing. You just run until you feel tired or get fed up and the same can be said with your gym session, no real plan, just going from machine to machine, exercise to exercise, usually the ones you find the easiest and most comfortable playing around with reps you are happy with. After this you head to the kitchen for some food, something quick and easy. Later that evening you Facetime your friend whilst complaining you cannot shift the last 3lbs of weight.

Training:

You have a goal set, you have your whole week and month planned out with what exactly you need to be doing and eating every day, whether this be a leg focused session, a rest day, a higher calorie day or a day where you just go for a walk – all of these are planned for you to reach your goal. You know how many sets and how many reps you need to do and how to progress forward. After your session you can head to the kitchen and know what you are going to have straight away because it is going to A) fuel you and B) fill you up and C) bring you one step further to your goal. Later that evening you Facetime your friend and complain that you need to buy new clothes because your current clothes are now too baggy, first world problems. Whilst on Facetime you are eating a well-deserved cheesecake which has been factored into your nutrition. Life is good.

Training > Exercising.

Stay safe,

Josh.
