With the vast majority of us gym goers having to retreat to our home gyms at current, are we going to lose all the progress we have made these past months and years? Most people I have spoken to have access to a spattering of dumbbells and/or barbell and then perhaps a bench. Anything more than that and you are lucky, so those of you with stair masters, multi gym cable machines and a full squat rack.

Most of us have sub-par access to equipment we are used to, so will this mean we will no longer be able to keep progressing, no! – music to everyone’s ears! Now, granted we probably will not be making any huge steps forward, however we certainly will not be taking any steps backwards. In order to maintain your current physique and fitness levels you will be surprised how far “light” dumbbells and body weight exercises will go. Building muscle requires a lot more effort compared to maintaining muscle.

“Old habits die hard” – We are not trying to create new habits, we are just altering our current ones.

For example, if you are used to training 5 times a week and you continue to train (all be it, altered reps and set) 5 times a week but matching the intensity you will take no steps backwards! Same with bodyweight exercises, doing bodyweight squats is 100 percent more beneficial compared to 0 weighted squats. You are sending that same signal to your body that you still require the muscle in your legs and glutes to squat.

Same can be said at the opposite end of scale, if you are using this time to sit around more to binge Netflix seasons and neglect your training you can inevitably expect to have some negative effects with your health and training.

In short, keep moving, keep doing the little things and you will bounce back very quickly when we get back into the gym!!
