I am not here to demonise any foods, this is not Slimming World with their “syns” and “free foods”. Every food has its place, some take you closer to your goal through its nutritional value and others serve mainly because we enjoy them and they are hyperpalatable… doughnut, in particular original glazed!!

I am going to give 3 examples I have heard over the years:

Example 1: A chicken and rocket salad which has been smothered in house dressing.

Example 2: A skinny latte with extra cream and a shot of caramel.

Example 3: Homemade chips roasted in goose fat.

All of these example could be made a lot better, but none of these examples are necessarily bad if they are tracked and accounted for, what do I mean by that? – Let us say you are currently working with a deficit that is equal to roughly 300 Kcals per day and you add extra cream and a shot of sugar effectively to your coffee. Is your deficit of calories still going to be 300 if you have not tracked it?

A 100-200 Kcal drink has now gone much closer to 400 Kcals without you realising.

Like I said, there is nothing wrong with adding cream to your latte as long as you track it.

So, how to not ruin your diet, be aware when you are putting mayonnaise on your chips, when you add caramel to your coffee, when you cook in an oil, when you have a biscuit with your tea. These things are only detrimental if they go untracked.

Stay safe,

Josh.
