Pedro wants to lose weight, he has hired a PT after years of struggling and has begun his journey to losing 20lbs. Pedro works long days in an office and manages a whole team of people, so his time is limited.

Pedro: “I can’t commit to the gym every day and I don’t want to drop my calories even more. What more can I do?!”

Me: “No problem here what so ever, let us just increase your NEAT”

Pedro: “Ehh?”

Me: “When you go to the toilet at the office, walk to the furthest toilet. When you park at the station, park further away. When you get off the tube, get off one stop early and walk the rest (weather depending). When you have a meeting, offer a walking meeting. Instead of taking the lift and scrolling through social media, take the stairs.”

All these little things all add up come the end of the day.

NEAT – Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. What this basically means is every activity that you do outside of the gym or your training.

Examples of NEAT would be; walking the dog at lunchtime, hoovering the house on a Sunday afternoon, washing your car or doing some gardening.

These are typically things we do not think much of when it comes to “activity”. But on average your NEAT actually makes up for 15% of energy burnt in a day, compared to EAT (Exercise Activity Thermogenesis – your gym training for example) which is only 5%.

Then you have TEF (Thermic effect of feed) which is 10%, this is the energy we use to consume, digest and store. The forth and biggest is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) which is 70%, this the number of calories we need to maintain our body weight and composition. Without going into too much detail these all add up and make our Daily Energy Expenditure. Back to Pedro’s story, 3 weeks later…

Pedro had been going to the gym just 3 times a week but has also been making an effort to increase his NEAT. He had lost 4lbs. He was hitting over 10,000 steps per day without having to sacrifice an hour of his day to just walk.

The reason Pedro struggled for years was because he could not afford to drop his calories any lower and he had very limited time to get to the gym.

So all we did was supplemented his EAT (Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) which was 3 gym sessions per week, with some more NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) which was him moving more during his day. All of this and he has lost no time in his day. But he has lost weight!

Stay safe,

Josh.
