Protein shakes

An extremely common supplement within the health and fitness industry, but are they good for you?
The most common and cheapest protein shakes no matter the brand is Whey powder, which is literally just a biproduct of diary and it is Whey powder I will be referring to throughout.
*Other types include, Isolate and Hydro which derive from the same source but are filtered more, ideal for anyone with a diary intolerance – you have an intolerance and what to know more, give me a message.

More often than not you will see at least one person leaving the gym or sat in the changing rooms drinking a smoothie like drink, that is probably going to be a protein shake, but why? – Convenience. Your average protein shake will be equal to a chicken breast in terms of protein contents and as you can imagine it is a lot easier to drink a drink compared to cooking and eating a chicken breast.
This is not to say you should cut out all food and swap them for a drink. Whole food will always prevail over supplements, a supplement by definition is there to supplement your diet not replace anything.
Reasons you would consume a protein shake:
1. Convenience, especially in a hectic work environment.
2. Increase protein and calorie intake.
Water or milk?
After you have trained or completed any type of physical activity I would recommend mixing your powder with water, this is because water does not take much time at all to break down and you want to “feed” your muscle as soon as possible.
I would suggest mixing with milk if you are using it to increase calories and/or protein as you would get a slower longer lasting supply of protein as milk takes longer to break down.
Both methods will deliver the same amount of protein, it is just how you want it delivered, quick or over a period of time.
Stay safe,
Josh.
